Mall in Hempfield, Pennsylvania released certain details about the project on Tuesday, but essential information such as revenue projections and tax implications for the facility is still being kept under wraps, local news outlets reported. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is set to hold a public hearing for the casino proposal on December 5 at the Hempfield municipal building, during which more information about the facility will be presented to state gaming officials and residents of the area where it will be located.
Stadium Casino LLC purchased earlier this year the license for Westmoreland casino for $40 million. The company had been formed as a joint venture between The Cordish Companies, operator of Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, and Greenwood Gaming Co., which manages Parx Casino in Bucks County. It emerged last week that Cordish would take full ownership of Stadium Casino, while Greenwood would exit their joint projects. Stadium Casino is also holding a gaming license for what would be Philadelphia’s second casino.
Gaming regulators are expected to vote on the proposal for Cordish to assume control of both the Philadelphia and the Westmoreland County mini casino during next week’s public hearing.
According to State Rep. George Dunbar, one of the four speakers at next week’s hearing, the secrecy currently surrounding the mini casino project might be related to the changes of ownership.
What Is Known So Far about the Casino
Developers have said that if everything goes smoothly, they will be able to open the new facility by the end of 2019. According to application papers, the mini casino will feature 750 slot machines and 40 table games. It will occupy the two-story, 100,000-square-foot vacant space of the Bon-Ton department store at the Westmoreland Mall. The store closed doors earlier this year.
Cordish said in a late Tuesday statement that more details about the project will be revealed next week. The statement read further that the company wants to bring “a first-class experience to Westmoreland” and that it will go well beyond casino gambling to also include “unique dining and entertainment experiences unlike anything currently in the region.”
Cordish also said that it expects the facility to generate $200 million in annual economic impact and to create nearly 1,000 construction jobs and about as many permanent jobs.
The company holds one of five licenses for mini casinos that are to be developed across Pennsylvania as a part of a sweeping overhaul of the state’s gambling industry that was given the nod by lawmakers last fall. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will hold a public hearing on December 4 for a mini casino in Beaver County. Owners of Mount Airy Casino have bought the license for the Beaver County facility. In addition, Penn National Gaming has revealed plans to build a $120-million mini casino with a sportsbook in York County that could open doors in early 2020.
