Casino strike over; union members ratify new contract. The four casinos are Cascades Casinos in Kamloops and Penticton, Lake City Casino in Vernon and Playtime Casino in Kelowna. A more than four month long strike at casinos in the Thompson-Okanagan is over after a razor-thin ratification vote. BCGEU members at Gateway Casinos in Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton and Kamloops have voted 50.6% to ratify a new four year contract. Union president Stephanie Smith tells Beach Radio News, 259 members were in favour, and 252 against. The four-month strike at four B.C. Interior casinos — including Cascades Casino in Kamloops — is officially over. On Friday, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment reached a new collective agreement.
“When it became clear that the company was not going to make an acceptable offer, the bargaining committee decided to exercise the strike mandate given to them by the workers.”
Close to 700 casino workers province-wide will be striking — including over 200 workers in Kamloops.
BCGEU members voted overwhelmingly in favour of going on strike earlier this month.
The main sticking point in the dispute is wages.
The last contract between the sides expired in September 2017.
